I thought that myself but that gave me another problem with one of the interlinking words...8d. Number turned out to be held by music (6) T.N.T. - I had assumed the answer to be twenty but with retrain in, twenty doesn't fit...

TENUTO - musical term for a held note; TEN + anagram "out"
