Really struggling with the across clues.

I think I've managed to slot together the 1st few acrosses and downs, but could do with a bit of help.

Across:
Somewhere to go to roll up stocking in Australia (6)
Thoroughly examine clean interior of failing academy (3)
Inculcates stupid detectives (8)

Thanks.

rossim,

It's a 'carte blanche' puzzle, so you have to solve most of the clues before you can even begin to fill the grid.

I haven't got very far with this yet myself but the inculcates one is (D)IM-PLANTS.

For thoroughly examine I was thinkin of VET but I can't match that with the word play.

The thoroughly examine one is VET .
Wordplay = Clean = VALET -A (for failing academy) with L being the extra letter.

Could someone help/hint with the first across one:
Dance orchestra's backing Latin American measures first

Thanks

Finding this tough too. There seem to be so many ways to squeeze 2 letters into a cell.

These might help:

Wander about street wheeling arms (4)
Potato rings? (4)
Capuchins are populating US islands (4)
Fly to linger on the scent round plants (6)

TIA

I'm really struggling too, but initially I have a grid problem. The grid is said to be 180 degree symmetrical: the first across answer has 8 letters and the last has 6. I can find one instance in the first answer where two cells can go in one cell, but that still makes 7 letters in the grid. The 6th and 7th letters of the first answer can go with the first and second letters of the 4th down answer. But where is the other instance? I have the first 4 down answers and the 4th is the only one that can combine with the first across answer to use cells.
