Not sure how these "updates" are co-opting the forum & getting past a firewall & a solid anti-virus, which also blocks site attacks. Never had these problems on the forum before, though others have.
Was leery to venture here, but had two more successful blocks from AVG since I reloaded it.
Personal experience - Norton is iffy.

The Java update offered was version 7-25 which caught my attention because I'm at 7-71

There is a legit update at
http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp
for version 8-25

Haven't worked through all that yet, but there are some useful tips.

Bit of a mess, eh? The scary part is when the update panel tells you that Java runs on 3 billion! devices.
Hackers' paradise.

I have asked Ash to have a look at this thread to see if there is anything he can do about the rogue update requests. So far, luckily, my computer does not seem to be affected.

Some applications and websites, such as Facebook, willonly run properly with Java enabled.

Same 2 happened to me yesterday but my AVG picked them up, fortunately. One Java and one Flashplayer.

With anything like that, don't even click on the X to close it, as it can be enough to activate potential malware.

Yes, clicking the X is usually futile & may invoke more trouble. Also, a right-click for the function menu off a program on the task-bar & using Close often doesn't work either.
The buttons are simply graphic interfaces that call a subroutine, which can be replaced by malware to do something else.

Best bet is F4 which should kill the browser. That's a system level command & it hasn't failed me yet.

Thanks to all for the links. I will certainly peruse those.

Somewhat ironic is the article from The Guardian. Their Genius puzzle page has had the Java horror show for at least 2 years (since I've been accessing it).
