Finally struggled to finish this, and parsed all the answers, apart from the following which I just cannot see. So, explanations please for:
5d. fruit perhaps people hold almost cheap (5)
answer: melon
12 food once, both bits for toast (7)
answer: cheerio
37 Land workers, people (bar one) refusing to believe in fish ? (9) answer: gardeners
50 Concentrate furiously on George's book and see no problem (4,4,4,2,3,4)
I see the definitions, but is George something to do with George Sand ?
answer: bury ones head in the sand

Extra hour in bed not working, neither is the coffee.

37d Gardeners - a gar is a fish - bar one deniers without the I, that's my take on it anyway!

37.. Gar is the fish, then 'deniers' is people refusing to believe. 'Bar one - means it becomes 'deners'.

12. Food = cheer, and 'i' and 'o' are bits in binary notatio

5. Men, people with lo(w)/almost cheap, inside.

5, Cheap is lo(w) with men around.

Many thanks sodexo and Malone. I don't think I would ever have parsed 12 without your help. I did spot the fish (Gar) in 37 but missed the rest.
