I'm on unfamiliar ground with this one but nearly over.
Are any of the straight lines on diagonal?

I have not Sussex the protagonists, Nelson, because I have not got the right missing letters obviously as nothing makes sense. Are you willing to point me in the right direction please?

I've shaded three of the lines - none diagonal - 25 cells and 12 more to find in two lines. I've got everything else except for the third letter of 18d.

I have three lines of 9 cells each and a possible line of 6 cells - so have one line of 4 to go (providing there're no overlaps!).

Re 18 D - I think the third letter has to be a 't' - and the answer fits with my reading of the clue and the extraneous bit.

Malone, i now have the three lines of nine letters, then a horizontal of two letters, followed by a horizontal of seven letters.

Thanks, Nelson - I have a possibility for the seven letter word, but am getting nowhere with the two letter one. Is it an abbreviation (and one commonly used in the subject matter of which I know nothing)?
