Grid filled without too much trouble. Extra letters "read in thematical order", but no idea what "thematical" means in this context. It's not normal clue order, nor is it in the order in which answers appear (1A, 1D, 2D etc). Any ideas anyone? Various names have to be erased, and several (unconnected) can be found, but the connection depends on the "thematic" message.

I am not as far on as you because I have had to do some work earlier. I suspect you may have to read from bottom to top given that 19d to 6d gives a word.

I am glad that worked. I am still struggling with 7 clues and, as always with such puzzles, I still have to identify the redundant letter in another 6. A ( heavy ) hint to 23 down and 27 down would be appreciatec as would confirmaton that the redundant letter in 40 down is "S".

Thanks for that Marca. Am still stuck with six clues and the redundant letter in four others. Am I right in thinking that one of the characters is a cartoon ship's captain?

Keep coming back to this during breaks from work. Thanks for help thus far. 33a, 35a , 39a, 23d, 27d and 30d are still proving very elusive. Any strong hints would be most welcome.
