I know it's a week old now, but I seem to be the only person needing help on 45a which is key to the whole bottom half: and I'm completely stuck on it. "A god afar stirred with fervent anger - one charged up". Everything about this clue screams "anagram ...stupid"! From the few letters I've got, I can only assume the answer is in French - may be "vin de -r---f ---e a o-". Can anyone get me going again please?

Thanks very much, trevor. Er ... yes! Never heard of it; now looked it up on Google, and not very much the wiser.

there was also a band from germany who were called Van de Graaff generator. i quite liked them and it's where i first heard the term.

...actually they are english.
