Unisex head preserver with a Welsh connection (8) - do you think CARDIGAN could be correct?

Cardigans are unisex with a Welsh connection .....but I don't see the head preserver bit. Sorry.

If you believe Wikipedia then apparently there is something called a Monmouth cap although I'm not sure if it was called a Monmouth!

I have Monmouth as a type of cap in Anne Bradford's Dictionary.
