Filling the grid wasn't too hard, but the omitted letters are very tricky. I'm only sure of four of them.

Can someone give me a hint for the theme?

Early 1970s BBC series and shortly after a spin-off board game.

Thanks Ginge.

Something along those lines was my initial thought (having looked up the geographical feature), but I've never actually heard of that programme/game.

Marca,

I'm missing letters 2, 3 and 5.

The 6th (T) is missing from 42A and 39D.

Actually, I don't think the 2nd letter is missing there. (The 'of' in 27D supplies the required 'O').

It's missing from 37A (PANTOMIME - MOME only gives A P*INT)

I've them all now (I think), but it's very tough. For instance, I think the 'I' is missing from 35D, but it wouldn't have to be (because SAIR = SAR)

Hi demeter and marca. For what it's worth I have the "o" missing from 26a go + (o in d.h.) and might it not be the "i" missing from 37a as "mime" is also a buffoon and would appear to be a more natural "dismissal"?
