50a: all I can get so far for this is 'close -fisted - which doesn't meant covetous!'

Chambers gives "covetous" as "avaricious" and "avarice" as "eager desire for wealth" and "covetousness". Close fisted looks kosher.

But 'close -fisted' means mean, niggardly.
Just checked in the Collins Thesaurus and, yes, it does give' close-fisted' as a synonym for 'covetous' there. In the OED, 'close-fisted'; is given as 'niggardly' but in Chambers it gives covetous and penurious.
To me, 'niggardly' and 'covetous' are not the same!!
..... but hey......who am I to argue with Chambers!
It's my LOI . and still bugging me!
