Am I right in thinking there's 2 possible answers for 35 across? And is 1 across Welsh?

yes 1a is Welsh
Yes 2 possibles for 35a - I went with the "a" but the "u" must surely be accepted too

Regarding the two apparent possibilities for 35. ac., the instruction '...each is a legitimate inflected headword in Chambers' settles the issue.

I agree with Harlequin re 35 across. The A version is not from a head word in Chambers.

I f you use 'a' it is a headword in Chambers, if you use 'u', it isn't, even though it is a very common derivative of a headword. Anyone know what Doc means by 'inflected' in this context?

I have interpreted it as meaning either the plural of a noun or the third person singular of a verb. If that is right the U version is correct while the A version is not as that is given as a straightforward abbreviation.
