2: Bits lost turn when cutting threads into head (5)

I've completed the crossword, but don't like to leave loose ends! I know what should be done to this clue, the answer must be 'TREND' (meaning 'turn'?) but how does the clue work?

If it wasn't trend, what letter pattern have you got?

Grid otherwise complete....hence only 'E' to confirm

Only thing I could come up with (very contorted) - bits lost when cutting threads into head are TR and S(=END) ??

It is contorted, but you've have cracked it.
bits lost from thread (to become head) = TR + END(s)

correction: TR+ END (end letter being "s")

Almost convinced...but what a crap clue!
