I would guess at FINN, being a Northern European person and a character in an American novel. I'll pass on the European fictional connection.

Sorry, that second sentence should have read "I'll pass on the English fictional connection.".

Hi Trevor,
I put in FINN,John is right about Huckleberry, the
English connection (I think) refers to Phileas Finn,a character of Trollope's.Any others you are
stuck on?
Regards,
Jerry

Thank you both.
All finished now. tho there are some that I can't quite see why (if I have the correct answers).
8d. and 31d. Also, I only got 43a. because of the 18. clue.
Should I be posting the clues here?

Trevor,
A PIN refers to a 4and1/2 gallons. A stand is
a partnership split by R=resistance.

Thank you again Jerry.
I was unfamiliar with both PIN and STAND, in these contexts.
Any explanation to 43a.?
All the best. trevor.

Trevor,
It is often said that the C of E is the Tory Party
at prayer,hence on the knees.
Hope this clears up the query.
