16a "An absorbing process as perverse Kate secures independence" (7)

I've got 0 - M - S - S and if right the answer should be OSMOSIS
I can see that the Kate is Moss and the I is independence, but for the clue to work shouldn't it be "so" perverse rather than "as" perverse ?

Any help appreciated

Perhaps the "as" is just supposed to clue "so" - I don't like it, though.

As can mean so and vice versa according to my thesaurus so the clue works for me.

I find the clue perfectly OK:
"so" is a synonym of "as" (in comparisons), perverse in the sense of reversed; Moss then takes in the "I", no?
