I think other responses miss the "drops" as a verb factor. I was steering you towards "weir" becaused if you "sound" the depth of water it is lower below the weir than above, the level actually drops. The word "tier" fits, and indeed is syonymous with "teardrop" but does not in my view carry the same provenance. But what do I know? Good luck.

For quite a while, I had the answer as "flat"
"Drop in sound" (music - a flattened note) level here (flat).
I thought that was a good clue, for that answer.oh well!
I can't grasp your "wier" explanation at all, I'm afraid.
