I haven't got the crossword, but, as a guess, KIngsley Amis's "Lucky Jim" was published in 1954.

I think it is mary poppins and there are 38 letters in 'a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down' ? But I cant get all the clues out to get the shaded in answers!
