Having trouble with 18A - I have CRATE? but cannot find theme answer

Whats the clue?

It's unclued and part of the puzzle's theme - "men of note"

I have no idea what you are trying to do, but Crate is an anagram of Carte. Richard D'oyly Carte, who composed.

No - definitely need one more letter on the end (assuming all other letters are correct) but thanks for the input

I won't spoil your fun at this early stage but suggest you should abandon the "r". Once I had the theme the puzzle became rather easier than normal.

Perhaps it's only me, but I'm finding this a bit tedious. Got the theme (pretty obvious) and I really can't be bothered raking through very long lists to find those of note beginning with C (most of whom I've never heard) to fill the gaps. Maybe I'm just having a grumpy day.
