and
42d. Really like going by private transport - an unfashionable habit? ?e?d?g?n. I thought this might be cardigan but I have 'scheme' for 47a and I've never come across a cerdigan! Help please. Thanks in advance.

30. Averment, something that's said. It's 'men', people, inside 'avert', stop.

42. Cardigan - dig/really like+car+an.

Maybe 'schema' for 47 A - you haven't given the clue.

Hi Malone, sorry for taking so long to reply - school sports, shopping, etc. Thanks for both answers. That was how I came to work out cardigan but it never occurred to me that 47a could be 'schema'. Well done you. I had gone for common old 'scheme'! Well done also for 'averment'. Easy when it's explained! They say the more crosswords you persevere with the easier it gets.
