Not sure about rolls Chrise, looks like word begins with E which I got from following clue...
1A. A purely symbolic plant (4)

I can't find a likely word starting with E. Might the plant be a ROSE or a LILY? Each can be a symbol.

If I choose lily the word could be LISTS, that poses another problem.
