I was thinking of Imply (state) possible parsing - way back = M1 reversed = IM + Ply (short for Plymouth) but not convinced with this !

Yes, I thought of IMPLY earlier, but then I got MOORAGE for 26A "Payment for giving birth" and the A is now the middle letter !
I'm pretty happy with that - "birth" & "berth"
Very weird !!
