I've put dead beat

So if it's dead beat what have you got for 51 down - I put cane for "sugar-yielding plant" - which is how I ended up with the last letter being E

Jazzgirl - I don't see how it can be beat. 51 down is sugar yielding plant in 4 letters and I have put cane. The e in cane is the last letter of 55 across - you want to put T when I have E

I corrected it to beet. Our posts crossed :)

Beet as in sugar beet. for 51 down
which gives me the T I need for dead beat in 55 across.
