Just add my two-penny worth.
trencher is a plate.
trencherman is someone who eagerly clears his plate-a big eater.

Thanks for that this week is full of words I am not familiar with or clues I am missing the point of so put me out of my misery and give me 23 down "how one had given a pointed reminder" nudged I think (N?D?e?) and 25 down ?i?et "piece about last character on point of becoming composer"

I agree with you Geoff, it was a tad cheeky today. Mind you it makes a change as the DT has been a bit on the easy side for some time now. I've got a fairly old (no.5) DT cryptic book and they are far harder than nowadays. Even the so called toughie doesn't present much of a challenge most days.
