The answers are BARRY as in island and Norman,
If cheeseboard is read as two words: Board Rarely Is Employed for starters.

My answers are:
1 Down - Barry (Barry Norman and Barry Island in S.Wales)
8 Across - Pansy (Pans with sy from the end of glossy)
10 Across - Brie (B from board, r from rarely,i from is, e from employed)
