People Thora Hird entertained a great deal = plethora. P for People, Thora for Thora?

Short guy's coming soon in big shop = chain store. Don't know where to start here...

The answer is formed from letters in the actual clue. ...PeopleThora...

Short guy = CHAP. Short of P = CHA

chain store=big shop.

cha(p)= short guy.
in store = coming.

and the phrase "in store".eg - you have a surprise in store for you.

I can forgive myself the 'chap' thing but plethora, jeez... I thought I'd trained myself to spot those hidden answers. Dumbkopf...
