Only one left to do! It's one of those where I've got most of the letters from other clues- but cannot for the life of me make sense of an answer. Any help welcome!

Clue:
Dry old Scots Tory going for restraint in eventful life? (6)

The letters I have are:

HIST?E

Thank you.

Chambers: Histie - Same as Hirstie. Hirstie - [obs Scot] - Dry; barren.

Not a word which I'd use in converstion!

And I wouldn't use it in conversation either!

Thank you so much!
I was wondering whther to get the Chambers dictionary- seems a bit OTT when I have the two volume Oxford shorter- but I see it is recommended for the AZED.

Thanks again
