"Small part of first half of alphabet"

Suppose the answer is "Item" although "Atom" also seems plausible, but cannot properly justify either!! Grateful to anybody who can ease my frustration!

it is Atom.....A to M !

in other words the first part of the alphabet A to M (being the 13th letter)

The answer is Water - from H to O(h2o).

I should point out that it was probably clued a bit better than I have shown it.

Another similar clue I saw ages ago in a Christmas themed Xword:

Abcdefghijklmnpqrstuvwxyz? (4)

Are you sure that it is the 'o' that is omitted? If it was the 'l', it would be 'Noel'...

D**n - thanks Caravaggio, of course you are correct!! 'Noel' - my only excuse is I typed it very quickly and for some reason had the 'O' missing in my mind - think I was still thinking about the H 2 O post earlier!!
