Thanks all, that's great. Hi Imagcq, I did look at various authors called 'James' and this one looks the likeliest candidate, but I still can't see where 'the second' fits in - any ideas?

Unless..... could it mean the second person involved in the autobiography, ie. Subject = the first and 'The writer' = the second?

Thanks for starting this thread Brendan - these were exactly the ones I had difficulty parsing too. Malone I still don't get 19d. Where does 'Queen's' fit in?

Queen= Regina abbreviated to R. With (v)isible.
