This is a tough one. I've solved over half the clues, but stuck now. Can anyone tell me if 27d is Van Eyck, or if not, give me a hint, please?

27d. Painter no longer with us owing to disgusting material that's not for all to see. (7 two words)

I can see the 'disgusting material' bit - that's 'yuck' with the 'u' (universal, for all to see) removed. I don't know how the rest works, but I think you're probably right.

Could the extra letter be o, giving wing or vane?

VAN = wing rather than VANE but I don't see the rest of the word play for any of the VANs!

My apologies to all, I am writing rubbish - ab and Malone have it spot on between them. I'll get my coat!
