1 is an anagram of the clue !!

Thanks Mamya - I thought it was but just couldn't do it - but have had another go and got ARCHLUTE, which I have heard of.

Anyone got an idea for (2)?? I am stumped!

I've been trying to make bass core fit this - only because it's an anagram, and the clue looks as if it should be an anagram. If you google this, there are plenty of references to "bass core" but to an ignoramus like me, it doesn't mean anything. Perhaps someone else can make something of it.

Well done people! Don't know if anyone sent the quiz back, but the winner had 99 out of 100 & 3 people got 98.
