80a could be Nanking. I don't know the answer to 51d but a name like Collingwood would fit. Still looking hopefully at the other clues! Regards.

Thank you so much for that. Have been doing this for a while this evening. Been working over Christmas, so hence the delay in starting. Having looked at it again, discovered 64d is McMahon. Nanjing is one of the spellings offered for 80 across. Your response is very much appreciated.

21d is 'Offiah'. I think his first name is Martin, better known as Chariots for obvious reasons.
Could 61a be 'Brace'?

I think COLLINGWOOD is the correct answer to 51d.
As you suggest, he is a Durham all-rounder, and the intervarsities soccer cup is the COLLINGWOOD CUP
