Look, they were giving them away in Waitrose, OK? And they were fresh out of Observers.

This was in their Cryptic Crossword #2708 - I finished it but I don't get this one:

One in front of stage who's at the mercy of masked man with knife? (11)
I have theatregoer (T-E-T-E-O-R) but can't see why except
One in front of stage = def'n
at the = part of anag?
Reg = man
oer = ???

The 'masked man' is a surgeon - and the theatregoer
is the patient going to theatre (as well as being the person at the front of the stage).
