I am new to Guardian and Paul, and connot get the parsing of the following

22a Brilliantly creative mind, however David Miliband is off? (6) Answer Edison. Ok on the definition, but the word play?

8d A degree sound to approach in reverse gear with a truck? (13) Answer Baccalaureate. I get the degree, but the wordplay??

Edward Milliband is David Miliband's brother

So, if David is off, then maybe Ed(ward) is on - Edison = Brilliant mind

Thank you Les40. As an Aussie I have never heard of David Miliband or his brother. It is no wonder I had no idea. I can now enjoy Baccalaureate.
