I'm going through an old Telegraph book, so I already have the answers. However, there's a couple I don't understand and would appreciate an explanation:

3d. Arranged substantial rise for a Shakespearean player (7)

Ans: LAERTES

Beyond the fact that Laertes is a character in Hamlet, I don't get it.

27d. Pilot holding up many a ship (7)

Ans: STEAMER

A steamer is clearly a type of ship, but what's the relevance of the rest of the clue?

3, Arranged=set. Substantial=real. Backwards gives Laertes.

Set - arranged + real substantial as in a real difference all rising in a down clue gives Laertes?

Pilot=steer. Many is M in Roman numerals. A is in the clue. Reverse m and a inside steer for steamer.

Steer (pilot) + M (1000 - many) + a = steamer a ship?
