Thanks to Jazzgirl, ChrisG & Molly for your invaluable contributions.

Once one is told what the answer is it seems so obvious I feel even more foolish I knew 39 was an anagram, & of what, but it just wouldn't come

With this help I finally have polished off the remainder but for :
44A Bondi beach expert's come up after a ducking (7)
S?P?A?E

Any ideas brighter than mine?

It is, of course, SURFACE.

Stupidly I had put HAPPY for MERRY in 2D & had omitted to amend it when given ONE-ARMED BANDIT.

Can now give up for the day.
