It is etiquette, and polite, to give the letter count, as not everyone has the crossword but they like to help. Without the letter count, there are just too many alternative answers.

It's lovely of anyone to help you out. It's equally kind if they advise you as to how to recieve better responses later.

The appropriate response is "thank you". Calling them superior strikes me as a touch rude.
