then 2 down (5) Top army man's beginning to have certainty c-n-- i thought maybe canon that gives the n in 4 across as well

12a) is ache (apache minus the AP for a priest)
2d) is cinch = certainty. Commander in Chief (for top army man) C in C plus h (the beginning letter in have)
