8d looks like SILVERISE, but I can't quite make it work (unless a RISE is OK for an angry response)

Thanks to you both - I knew it had to be silve---- but I didn't know of 'rise' as an angry response. However, as they say, I know now! Cheers.

Of course - duh! That gives me 'teen' for 19a, which is teeny, but undersized.

I thought of it more as "getting a rise out of someone" - i.e. provoking a response (though not necessarily an angry one?)
