A real stinker this week and more head-scratching than normal! Just leaves me with two parts of two
solutions I can't fathom. 39 Ac. "Great rock? This
might be a let-down on the face of it." The answer
is ABSEIL, but where does the rock come into it?
Also 49 Down "It's served up with chicken and
pasty." The answer is ASHEN, but where does the
"AS" part of the answer come into the reckoning?

Come to think of it, there is no clue for the rock part
other than its connection to the second part of the
clue.
