36 A. English crown competed in Kansas (5)
??a??

26 D. Mean singer with Yankee orchestra(6)
????g?

NB. The preamble says some clues 'contain one word superfluous to solving'.All the other clues lead to words that 'must be treated accordingly before entry'. (accordingly refers to a quotation given by the initials of the superfluous words).
Thanks for any help with this.

Could 26 be Sting + y?

Morning Malone

How about KRANS = crown of rock (dunno where the English comes from, the term is of A. African origin)?

KS = Kansas; competed = ran

Jolan I've never yet posted a response but I love your 5 on a Tuesday, I'm relatively new (not according to my Birth Certificate) to the Forum.

Thank you very much Ginge. I tentatively started "5" some years ago (time really IS relative, when one reaches more that the four-score and ten). I was a bit scared because of the very high quality and expertise of the folk on The Forum. Hope you'll join in with pre-comments and answers at 5.

Re the above, I wondered about "orchestra" in 26D but you've cleared this up for me. Ta again.

Off out to try and do a wee bit in the garden.

Enjoy life (and, of course, crossies!

Thanks, everyone - especially Jolan for 'krans', which seems perfect.
'Stingy' turned out to be ideal.
