First thing that comes to mind is STATE, but that doesn't seem cryptic, does it?

Now, now, paul, it is a bit of a trick, in that they're all cities in the Boswash megalopolis and the other Washington is way the heck over in Starbucks Land. I do think state must be the answer. Still not cryptic- just a sort of curve ball.
