I'm having huge trouble with this one. I have about half the clues cold-solved. The people over on AnswerBank are saying that the grid fills easily once you make a start, but I'm not finding this. I have answers to three of the four clued 8-letter words, and only one is a candidate for the 8-letter space in the SW part of the grid, but nothing seems to follow from that.
What am I missing? Any hints, please?

You are right that only one 8 fits in column 5, and crosses with only one 4 letter answer. Feel free to email mr.mournful@btinternet.com for any more info on gridfill.
