It's Cupid to a T, helplessly entangling others (8).

I'm thinking AMORETTO. (TO A T + MORE in the middle).

But is it right?

The only actual letters I have are:

- - O - - - T -

(If I could get 1 Down or 3 Down, I would have two more).

I agree with your reasons for 'Amoretto'.

The D I get from DON PASQUALE as an answer to:

The E is from AMORETTO.

Now here's one I haven't been able to get:

'quix' sounds like 'quicks' (are these fast bowlers?).
'o' = nothing.
'te' = the boundary letters of 'the'.

Maybe something there ...

Aha! Quixote. Thanks again, Jim and Sillyboy. I kept thinking of a character from Dickens -Skimpole. Bloody awful clue, though.

I would have got it had I been able to get my final one, which Quixote has now given me by virtue of the Q. Both start with Q!

It is QUAD. The clue was: Court in sporty vehicle. Doh.

I kept thinking of SUV - and various types of Court (woo, etc.)
