This crossword has been hard!
Can anyone explain why 13a is possessed?
Clue is had to be in need of bell, book and candle
and why 4d is unpeg
clue is Leading, say, having captured knight for free
and why 19a is Uncle Tom,s cabin
clue is:Volume lender to draft hire car in

Also am struggling with bottom left, perhaps one or two clues would get me going......
34d: Carp lack appendage on top, so deprived of energy (4,5)
F??? ????T
48a: Girl was liable to save time, not taking train (10)
??????n???
And 33d: Junior teacher may look tall here, having thus secured Gold Cup? (2,1,5,4)
Is the answer By a large head?

I don't like this compiler!

I am equally mystified by the top left.
However,
34d FIND FAULT - fin d(e)fault
33d BY A SHORT HEAD
48a I have UNATTENDED but am not totally sure of this.

UNATTENDED looks good Una was liable, Una tended , saves time T = unattended as in without a "train" - following attendants?

Thanks, ab. I'd got as far as Una being a girl and a T for time. Good to have a full explanation!

Had to be in need of bell, book and candle
Had is definition and "In need of bell book and candle" meaning "possessed" and needing exorcism?

(although strictly bell, book and candle is the ceremony of excommunication not exorcism, Hollywood doesn't always pick that up)
