Is 27 (ac) Blues Brothers? (Wild guess with 4 letters solved). It is unclued for those not solving this one.

Nope, but it does start "blues..." and ends in "s".
Does anybody have a solution for 9ac? I have "-eld" but it may not be "l".

9ac is WELD - look at 2nd def. of WELD in chambers - and is a "thematic clue"

Thanks very much for that! I now have a complete grid, the two phrases and a name in the bottom row. Only have to work out the other "character".

The clashing character is symmetrically opposite

Thanks, cruciverbalist. No wonder I couldn't find the clashing character. I had the the wrong first letter for 6d. Makes sense now.

I have a completed grid, identified the clashing characters and the two phrases. The 15 misprint corrections don't seem to make any sense in identifying which of the two characters should be highlighted - (I'm only sure of 13 of these).
