Sorry Jonty, missed your post

It's a bit tenuous but I was first thinking of a skewer as in to baste the elf on a BBQ (ish)
But now I'm thinking, to skewer is to fasten and to baste (in needlework) is also to fasten. Then it works a bit like an &lit because the fasten actually fastens in the word 'elf' and is shortened (small) to Bast (-e)

Maybe it's a long shot and maybe someone else can offer something more concrete
What do you think?

Thanks Les40 as you say a little tenuous but as I am off on my hols and need to send off my entry before I go if no one else comes up with another suggestion before noon I will go with it.

You are right with BELFAST for #1 but the explanation is that "somehow" suggests an anagram, and B (elf) AST is an anagram of STAB which means to skewer. :)
