Possibly the hardest crossword I've attempted. One and a half weeks, and been stuck on the last three for a day or so:
7d Press probing case of dubious lover slipped back (6) ?URIE? (one of the L's in the clue is redundant)
7a Shabby dressershard to get advancing English lines (6) ?C?RES
42a Horse steps up to platform bearing guerilla head (4) ?ERC
(for the across clues the number represents the grid entry - one answer needs its head removed, the other a name for a bird removed).
Any hints appreciated

Not sure I get this, but could shabby dressers be scarecrows?

I think I see, aristo
SCARE(crow)s
and SCARSE with English advanced - but shouldn't that be SCARCE for hard to get?

Scarecrows is correct.
You have an incorrect letter in 7d. Should be 'G' and not 'I'. That should give you the answer , crackabilly.

Thanks aristophanes
Of course it is - I had miscounted the number required 13 not 12

Thanks as well uncle_w & Chrise.
Had assumed GAN was a bird, which it is not

I think that the I is wrong in your 7d as the answer is SURGED - DS backwards around URGE.

42a is PERC from PERRON around CHE (PERCHERON)
