Just need help with one question Your humble compiler's surname (4) ?E?D

I think the answer is SEED....but just want someone to confirm....

I think the clue is with the word COMPILER....one who collects specimens.....

Can you give us more info re the puzzle ?

The only compiler that comes to mind is Azed, but that's not his surname:

Probably more to the clue.

Because this crossword is from a mans mag the questions are very suggestive.....

I've had another think about the answer and now I've come up with another possible answer......HEAD

I'm still going with the clue as being COMPILER, which could also mean AUTHORITY, so that's where I've come up with the answer HEAD....so now I don't know which answer to use....HEAD or SEED....?

A compiler is a setter and seeds do set. Just an idea, not totally convinced.

Just wondering if anyone else has any comments to add as to which answer I should use?
