a churchwarden is a long-stemmed clay pipe for smoking.

l(umberjack) + arch (knowing)

Province governed by leader of aristocrats - inside is very bliss.

province = NI (Northern Ireland)
governed = ran
leader of aristocrats = A
V(ery) [inside]

Sorry Brendan, I missed your reply. apart from what Chiff has put 'then dim' (anag) the mind does truly boggle.

Thanks Shooty, thanks Chiff - I saw the 'THEN DIM' part but just can't see where 'Boggles' comes from.
