How about the following Rosie:
Curie (ci) and 'dane' backwards round 'ONE'.
Can anyone explain 26a which can be 'EDH' or ' ETH' for clue ' Glum character from Iceland'.

Thanks Rosie .
Only remaining ones are the two unclued. 19a is probably 'FREE' and 34a is 'PAI?'. ' You buy one you get one free ' makes 19a ok but at a loss for the other.
Puzzled about ' pencil at first '. Appears one has to do some erasing before completion! Any ideas?

I toyed with Pain as in when we get a bargain we say 'that was painless', but in the end went with Paid.

If you look at a consecutive run of 13 letters along the
centre row you will see why 'use pencil' applies.

I eventually decided that -

'You buy one' = PAID

'You get one' FREE

I'm with you, Rosie, I think that is why we have two after following the instruction.
