I should have added...anyone under fifty wont have a scooby what a 'bus conductor' is....well let me enlighten you....he/she was a second bus company employee (the other being the driver) who took fares and issued tickets on the bus while it was carrying passengers. This was before bus companies got drivers to collect fares as passengers entered the bus.

That's why they were called 'Clippies' Trevor.
They clipped or punched the ticket to cancel journeys as they were used up.

makes perfect sense drumbeat. i remember random inspectors on the underground and trains would punch tickets but i used to just chuck my bus tickets into a receptacle at the back of the bus

If you were running to catch a bus the conductor would ring the bell to tell the driver to set off so that you could not quite reach the platform at the rear of the bus - it was amazing how expert they were at this game.
